Storms of Life

Mark 4:35-41 (English Standard Version)

35On that day, when evening had come, he said to them, “Let us go across to the other side.” 36And leaving the crowd, they took him with them in the boat, just as he was. And other boats were with him. 37And a great windstorm arose, and the waves were breaking into the boat, so that the boat was already filling. 38But he was in the stern, asleep on the cushion. And they woke him and said to him, “Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?”39And he awoke and rebuked the wind and said to the sea,”Peace! Be still!” And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. 40He said to them, “Why are you so afraid? Have you still no faith?” 41And they were filled with great fear and said to one another, “Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?”

As in takot talaga. I could just imagine how strong this storm was. Really strong… And then biglang nakita nila si Jesus na mahimbing sa pagtulog. Hindi ko alam kung ano ang nasa isip nila that time nung nakita nila si Jesus natutulog. Siguro, frustrated sila or annoyed kasi parang walang pakialam si Jesus sa storm.

Like me, minsan kapag feeling ko nagagahol na ako, and the hand of God is not evident sa situation, minsan napapaisip ako where is God during those times. It reflects humanity. Kapag may problems, talagang mabilis ako ma-sway ng circumstances. At the beginning of it, nagwoworry din ako.

Nung ginigising nila si Jesus sa pagtulog, ang laging turo sa akin about that is because they fear the storm and they want Jesus to do a miracle. Di ba the disciples should have known that Jesus is capable of doing it? Pero bakit surprised pa rin sila? It could be possible, na hindi nila inexpect na yun ang gagawin ni Jesus. Siguro, they woke Jesus up kasi concerned sila sa Kanya, so dapat magising Siya para magtake cover din from the storm. Pero hindi yun ang ginawa ni Jesus. Jesus calmed the storm instead.

Like example, since alam natin that God provides, minsan gusto natin i-fulfill ni God mga promises Niya kasi dependable Siya. Kasi Siya ay God of integrity. Na gagawin Niya yung sinabi Niyang gagawin Niya. Pero I have realized that, although hindi masama na gawin yun, parang naging concerned tayo for God’s reputation. We fail to see that He is God and He can take care of Himself and His promises. True it is, that we focus on God’s face and not so much on God’s hands. We focus on His face by becoming intimate with Him. Knowing Him more and more. Feeling the beat of God’s heartbeat. Having faith that the God we serve is real, personal, and powerful.

Napansin ko din that nung na-calm na ang storm, the disciples were terrified. Why so? They can’t be terrified because of the storm, kasi wala na ang storm eh. Nag calm down na. I believe, there were terrified because of the calm. It’s a fearful awe in God. The real fear of the Lord is not the one that haunts us, but a fear that makes us all the more worship Him kasi ganun katindi ang ating Panginoon. Worthy of worship talaga si God.

But Jesus seemed so hard on them. Pinagalitan pa sila! I was relating it about how the story started. So Jesus must have known that a storm was coming. He slept pa nga nung nasa kalagitnaan ng ng karagatan. Jesus was oblivious with the storm in His sleep. This story is telling me na in our Christian lives, meron talagang mga pagsubok na darating. In our biggest storms, mga problems na sa tingin nating napakahirap lagpasan, the passage tells us that Jesus knows what we are going through and that Jesus IS WITH US at all times. He invites us to trust in Him in everything. Yung faith natin, palakihin natin, coz even if it seems natutulog si God, the passage tells us na God is always there. Even if we walk in the valley of the shadow of death, hindi tayo magfear. Instead, our faith must be OVER our fears. We can resist fears. We can have faith. Our boat isn’t going down kasi andyan lang palagi si Jesus!
